This imagery traces the parallels between women and a creature whose lore holds similar contradictions passed down through generations.
In European lore, the magpie’s chatter was called noisy, deceitful, even dangerous, much like how women’s voices were judged across cultures. What was wisdom became witchcraft, what was intelligence became threat. And for many women of color, poor women, and queer women, the cost of being too loud or too knowing was even greater. Both bird and woman carry these contradictions shaped by fear, their voices rewritten as flaws. This piece of wearable art aims to highlight the parallels between the narrative on women and the narrative of the magpie.
